The Turkey & Spam Ring

Where: The Beach Haven Fishery Test Kitchen - LBI, NJ
What: Ava's Turkey & Spam Ring
Build: Cubed turkey breast, Swiss cheese & Spam. White onion, green onion, Craisins, walnuts, Dijon mustard, heavy mayonnaise, parsley, coarse ground black pepper, 2 tubes Pillsbury crescent rolls, celery, crisp bacon, melted butter.
Comment: Yeah, I know what you're thinking, not only is the review not a burger, but it's a homemade dish. But sometimes a homemade dish is so good it needs to be shared. This creation was the by product of one of my brother-in-law's recipes with a lot of help from my Niece, Ava.  Chef Jude at the BHF was nice enough to let us build this masterpiece in the Fishery's kitchen before things got busy. Thanks Chef Jude! Rather than bore you with having to read 3 pages of "how to" stuff, I've put together a "step-by-step" photo album which should give you more for less, enjoy. BTW, this thing is freakin delicious, def a 10/10 for me.     Great job Avers.

Choppin onions...

Two tubes of crescent rolls to be used later...

Cubed turkey breast and Swiss cheese...

Cubed Spam deep fried to a golden brown....(stupid)

No sense in me telling you what this is.....

Ditto...

No Dijon compares to Grey Poupon, although some Frenchie's would argue that statement (but what do they know)

Add ingredients in large bowl....

Dump in a bunch of this....

Chop and add some of these....

Mix well......

Avers!!!

What would any recipe be without crisp bacon....

Birth of the Sun...

Avers and Chef Jude....

The Sun is complete, on to the stuffing...

With the addition of the bacon, we can now stuff the ring...

Stuff it, then...

Wrap it...

Now my favorite ingredient....

Pour melted butter all over it...

A sprinkle of fresh ground coarse black pepper....

Push some additional walnuts into the top, sprinkle with chopped parsley...

Into the oven....

Wait till you get to the close-ups.....

Dear Lord.... thank you....

Salty, slightly sweet, creamy goodness...

Jake's Wayback Burgers, Little Ferry, NJ

Jake's Wayback Burgers on Urbanspoon
Where: Jake's Wayback Burgers, Little Ferry, NJ
What:  The Triple Triple
Build: The Triple Triple consists of nine 3.3 oz patties, American cheese (one slice per patty),  lettuce, and tomato and goes for $15.99 at this NJ location.  An Internet report says the burger has 5100 calories and 117 grams of saturated fat, which is close to six buckets of KFC fried chicken.

Comment:  The Triple Triple breaks down like this:
3.3 oz patties x 9 patties = 29.7 oz divided by 16 oz = 1.86 oz or almost 2 lbs. of meat.

My third trip to Jake's Wayback Burgers did not disappoint. In fact, it seems the burgers just keep getting better. A colleague at work ordered the Triple Triple and the rest is pretty much history. He had finished half the burger and "hit the wall" and we were okay with that, but he made the mistake of asking the girl behind the counter how many people actually finished this burger.  She replied, "Acutally, there was only one person that couldn't finish it". Needless to say, my friend didn't want to be the second guy, so it was game-on. There isn't much more for me to say about the quality of the beef that I haven't said in previous posts, so I'll let the photos tell the story.  Awesome, just awesome.....
And kudos to Chris for killing that monster.....

Happy to see the Triple Triple as a regular menu item....

Start the grill!

The Triple Triple Masterpiece arrives...

Close up 2

Prepping for the feast (still happy)

He gives good face...

Autopsy shot...

Halfway through, there's a bit of hurt in those eyes as he hits the wall.....

Halfway finished, he made the mistake of asking the girl behind the counter how many people actually finish this burger. She replied, "Actually, there was only one person that couldn't finish it".....

Time to regroup and plan a second attack

Each bite feels like an entire burger at this point....

Not much to go.....

Optimistic about finishing although the eyes are closing fast....

From behind, it looks like a normal day at Jake's....

Finally, down to the last bite... can he do it?!

YES!
As we walked to the car, the calories and fat content set in and he started slurring his words like a drunken sailor....  hilarious!!!

The Porter House, Montvale, NJ

Porter House Prime Steak House & Cigar Bar on Urbanspoon
Where: The Porter House, Montvale, NJ
What: The Black & Blue Burger (with a glance at our appy and 2 other sandwiches)
Build: 10oz certified Angus hamburger, fresh ground pepper, crumbled blue cheese, crispy fried onions on a Kaiser roll.
Comment:  Went to the Porter House this week on the recommendation of a colleague at work. Great cozy little place with picturesque outdoor seating on a stone patio with lots of hanging plants and no shortage of atmosphere. We immediately had high expectations for the food. First up was another recommendation from our colleague, the "Irish Nachos" which were a culinary masterpiece and (little did we know) would end up being the best thing we'd be eating that day. They were hand-cut potato chips deep fried and laced with American and Cheddar cheeses (in between each layer of chips) and topped with pulled pork and chopped green onion - fantastic. Next up, the BBQ Cuban sandwich which consisted of cider mopped pulled pork, Dijon mustard, Swiss cheese & pickles on rye bread. This one def sounded better than it tasted - "just average".  Next, the Cheese Steak Panini - the menu states the sandwich consists of:  "Shaved" prime rib, diced red onion & Cheddar cheese on Rye bread. "Shaved" Prime Rib? Really? I don't think so.... check out the close-up photo below... the  "shaved prime rib" was more like thick sliced pot roast - this one was dry and disappointing.
Last and almost certainly least, the Black & Blue Burger: Again, it looked good on paper, but the execution fell short. Whenever I see a "black" & blue burger, I immediately believe the burger will be blackened with Cajun blackening seasonings, don't you? Oh nay nay at the Porter House... it's a burger with black pepper on it - that's it. Between the lack of clarity for this menu item and the disappointing lack of burger flavor in the beef itself, I think my lunches at the Porter House are pretty much over. However, as I said, the ambiance, the nice wait staff and the appy's all make for a killer happy hour joint.
The burger gets a 6.5/10 (boring)
