Shake Shack, Upper West Side, NYC

Shake Shack on Urbanspoon

Where: Shake Shack, Upper West Side, NYC
What: ShackBurger
Build: Cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce
Comment: This week I was able to combine a fun team-building event at work with a new burger joint. While visiting the American Museum of Natural History I was able to steal away to The Shake Shack a few blocks away for a new blog entry. I've been dying to try the place out after all I've been reading and every time I've tried in the past I was met with what is now their signature "out-the-door" lines (and usually down the sidewalk).  But today, the line was only "to" the door so in I went.  The total wait was just shy of 20 minutes (for 1 single ShackBurger) which allowed for a lot of people-watching, something New York is great for and something that made the wait seem a lot shorter. Finally my wireless "food-is-ready" buzzer buzzed and I promptly grabbed my burger and made for a bench across the street at the entrance to Central Park West. I could smell that awesome old-fashioned rendered fat as soon as the bag opened and like a lunatic I spent quite a few moments just smelling the sandwich - turning the burger around and smelling... I'm salivating thinking of it. The meat is a proprietary blend of 100% pure Angus beef and I'm guessing the fat content is a 70/30 ratio or close to it. I'm always afraid this type of flat grill burger is going to be too salty (like most Smashburger joints) but this burger was salted to absolute perfection. The flavor of the meat was so delicious I was ticked off that I didn't order 2 or more.  The burger is topped with fresh green leafy lettuce and 4 slices of ripe plum tomato. The ShackSauce goes on top and then the grease splattered bun on top of that. In a word, AWESOME.  Again, with any near perfect burger, there's just not much to say other than go and eat it as fast as you can. 10/10.

Burgerfest 2013 !

Beach Haven Fishery on Urbanspoon

Where: The Beach Haven Fishery, Long Beach Island, NJ
What: Too much to mention here folks, just scroll down the 45 photos or so of the summers last weekend of burger greatness and read the captions....
Build: Ditto....
Comment: Celebrating the end of a great summer season with a Burgerfest feast at The Beach Haven Fishery - I feel sorry for all you haters, vegetarians, vegans and any other non-burger person who did not make it to the BHF this year because it's another year you had to settle for mediocrity.  All the burgers you are about to see are going to make you  hungry.... and yes, all of them slid easily over the finish line with 10/10's on my rating scale.
A final note: One of the things I appreciate the most at the BHF is the fact that no one ever loses respect for the burger. They never lose sight of the fact that the sandwich they are making is a "BURGER" and because of this, the toppings never overpower the burger but blend with it, complimenting and contrasting. Be sure to click on the photos to make them larger - you won't be sorry.

The Fire & Ice Burger
Blackened sea scallops, deep fried onions dredged in flour and spices over a 1/2 pound 100% Black Angus burger, topped with blue cheese sauce on freshly baked butter-toasted Ciabatta roll.

Typical out-the-door lines every evening and the customers have no problem with it... what does that tell you? Hmmmmm?

The Blushing Shrimp Burger
1/2 pound Black Angus burger, sauteed tomatoes, garlic, basil, EVOO, black pepper, Parmesan and American cheeses, topped with seasoned bread crumbs and broiled on freshly baked Ciabatta roll.

The Buffalo Shrimp Burger
This is not your local bar's Buffalo Shrimp Burger. Click on the photos to make them larger and just look at that goodness - you can almost taste it....

The only fish market I know that NEVER smells of fish...

The Tex Mex Burger
This little gem was the result of stuffing a 1/2 pound Black Angus burger with chopped onions, black olives and Cheddar cheese then topping it with fresh salsa, basil, sour cream and a sauteed shrimp.

The Steakhouse Mushroom Two-Cheese Burger
Another 1/2 pound of prime American cow topped with mushrooms and onions sauteed in butter and *Maggi sauce with garlic. These big Portabellos' taste like a piece of steak when Chef "Magic" Mike gets done with them. Next, a blend of American and blue cheeses are added and the fat lady is singin' ...  Awesomeness.

The Picnic Dog
The Fat Pat
 The Abortion
 The Hangover Helper
 The Jersey Dumpster...

...call it what you will, it was a 1/4 pound Black Bear hot dog wrapped in a 1/2 pound Black Angus burger and topped with just about every condiment known to man.
Not for me, but I'm sure someone would love to attempt this beast.
