White Mana - Jersey City, NJ

Where:
470 Tonnelle Ave
Jersey City, NJ
07307

What:
Cheeseburger

Build:
I'm guessing 2.5 to 3.0 ounce burger patties, American cheese, grilled onions, pickle, dash of K, mini hamburger bun.

Comments:
When it comes to slider burgers, White Mana in Jersey City is the king of the hill. If you want to taste the quintessential Jersey slider, look no further. White Mana in Jersey City has been serving the very essence of what a slider should be. First opened at the 1939 Worlds Fair in New York, then opened up shop in JC.

If you love a steamy, creamy, oniony, squishy slider burger, your Church is in session in Jersey City.

This "cash only" diner is a tiny round structure on the corner of busy Tonnelle Ave and Manhattan ave. The inside is dripping with nostalgia as well as the aroma of onions and rendered fat. This is a "must" stop for anyone who even remotely enjoys a good burger.
I'm not sure why the other White Manna (2 n's) in Hackensack, NJ gets so much hype. It's been featured on so many food programs and reviews and it even earned a spot on an episode of Guy Fieri's Diner's, Drive-in's and Dives. I just don't get it. I mean the burgers are good, don't get me wrong, but the Jersey City White Mana is easily a cut above -  and yet they never seem to get the recognition they rightfully deserve.

I'd be doing my readers an injustice if I didn't mention these other unique, and delicious burger establishments. Each has been making their own variation of the Jersey Slider for decades.

(In no specific order)

The White Rose System 201 E 1st Ave, Roselle, NJ

The White Rose Diner 1301 E Elizabeth Ave, Linden, NJ

The White Rose Hamburgers 154 Woodbridge Ave, Highland Park, NJ

The White Diamond Restaurant 1207 Raritan Rd, Clark, NJ 07066

(Forgive me if I've missed any).

None of the White Rose restaurants are affiliated with each other, although I believe there was a time when they were, but I'm saving that for a future blog.

White Castle was the first to reference the use of the word "white" in their name and it was for the purpose of emphasizing cleanliness at a time in the early 20th century when Americans were hesitant to eat ground beef after Upton Sinclair's 1906 novel "The Jungle" which had publicized the poor sanitation practices of the meat packing industry at the time.

At White Castle, everything from their white uniforms, white paper hats and white tile floors to their white building exterior were targeted at removing this stigma, and it worked. Although I need to research the history a bit more, I'm convinced that the White Manna, White Mana, all 3 White Rose restaurants as well as The White diamond were all aiming at the same mission, so keep an eye out for my history of "The White restaurants of New Jersey" sometime in the future.

Chef Alvin Cailan of "Eggslut" restaurant success and The popular YouTube show: "The Burger Show", invited Padma Lakshmi, of FoodNetwork fame to join him for a visit to White Mana in Jersey City. The 9-1/2 minute show captures the essence of what I'm trying to convey here, but be warned, it will also leave you drooling for sliders.
