The Swizzle Inn Pub - Bermuda

Where:
The Swizzle Inn Pub (visited Oct. 2019)
87 South Road Warwick, Bermuda (441) 236-7459
sss@swizzleinn.com

What:
The Bermuda Fish Sandwich - AKA, The Blue Hole Fish Sandwich

Build:
Deep-fried local Wahoo, batter-coated in island seasonings, spicy slaw, lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce on sesame bun. I substituted butter-toasted raisin bread for the sesame bun making this a legitimate Bermuda fish sandwich - $18.50

Comments:
This Bermuda fish sandwich is a culinary triumph, and it's brought to you by The Swizzle Inn, Southampton Parish, Bermuda.

This quaint bar/restaurant has all the character of a traditional English pub. Built in 1652, the building and it's owners have managed to retain it's old-world charm and coziness. We stopped by for an early lunch while vacationing and found we had the place to ourselves, so we bellied-up to the bar and took a seat.

I asked for a traditional Bermuda fish sandwich and the barkeep told me to order the Blue Hole Fish Sandwich and substitute the roll for raisin bread and "bang", that's how I came to sample my first Bermuda fish sandwich.

The flavors in this sandwich were on my mind the rest of the day, it was the epitome of sweet-meets-savory.

The richness of the beer batter - the tang of the spicy slaw and tartness of the pickles along with the creaminess of the tartar sauce were all colliding with the sweetness of the raisins. It all added up to a sandwich bursting with flavor. I couldn't put it down, and if it wasn't so big, I would've ordered another.

The Islanders will tell you that Art Mel's "Spicy Dicy" Bermuda fish sandwich is the best on the island, but until I get there, The Swizzle Inn's version will remain my favorite.
