Exit 24 off I95 north in Fairfield, CT - don't drive past it.
I can't express what an awesome experience it was to dine at the Super Duper Weenie. My brother-in-law and I have heard about this place for years and on a car hunting trip to CT, we had a golden opportunity to visit. I'm not going to lie, we expected the usual hotdog joint where a time-worn, disinterested staff is selling hotdogs not because they love what they do, but because it's a job; not-so at Super Duper Weenie. Gary Zemola and staff are doing it differently; as soon as you walk in, you feel an energy about the place. I can't explain it, but it's there and I'm sure it stems from Gary's hotdog enthusiasm. Gary and his staff are as warm and welcoming as they are talented at the grill.
On to the dogs...
The dogs are split and placed flat side down on the grill until golden brown. I've had dogs like this before but I rarely see this much careful attention to cooking and building a hotdog. Not much more to say; although the photos don't do these dogs justice, they will still make you hungry.
Hope to see you guys again soon!
Fieri's got nothin' on us...
Meet Gary's fantastic staff... Nick and Olivia, two genuinely nice kids...
Fresh-Cut Fries: Potatoes grown just for Super Duper Weenie, hand-pressed and fried to perfection in 100% soy oil. Best tasting fries we've ever eaten.
Onion Rings: You won't see these on the menu, but Nick brought us out a sample... OMG!!! Like nothing you've ever tasted. The texture led me to believe there was a cornmeal involved but Gary said "nope, no cornmeal", but the texture was there and with great underlying flavors.
Fresh-Cut Fries...
The signature New Englander was my favorite...
Gary hand-cutting some fresh potatoes for fries; it doesn't get any better...
